Harvard Invents
Football As We Know It
Early collegiate football was so brutal that serious casualties, even
deaths, were not uncommon.
As part of the general revision to make the sport safer, the playing
field was enlarged. Harvard Stadium, built of solid concrete,
could adapt to a longer field, but not a wider one.
To pep up game activity without a wider field, the experimental
forward pass was incorporated as part of the official game rules for
the first time. |
Stockard
Channing '65
Few know that
The West Wing and Hollywood/Broadway star Stockard Channing was
a member of the crew for HPC 116, "William
Had the Words".
As a Radcliffe senior, Susan Stockard had not yet married Hasty
Pudding President Walter Channing. She had no acting part in the
production.
However, she painted scenery and was an inspiration to the rest of us
slopping the rabbit-skin glue on canvas. |
Miscellaneous Facts
|
- Cannonballs
tossed out of dormitory windows during the Revolutionary War times
made the dents in Yard sidewalks.
- Only one volume of John Harvard's original library survived a
devastating fire because it was sneaked out by a late-working
