Thanks for dropping in. It is unusual to call in members of a primary reading audience for a critique before rather than after. On the other hand, this is insurance. It is difficult for an unknown writer to find a publisher at all, and even if one is located, to convince one to promote a first work such as this. It’s important to refine it as far as possible.
I believe a primary audience will be found among those who are in some way connected with Harvard. Natives of London and India will also find it of particular interest. The far larger audience is the USA and international readership that thinks Harvard is something between Camelot and Atlantis and quite capable of spawning Hunter and his friends. Hunter is about a third Harry Potter, a third Indiana Jones, and the rest Oliver from Love Story. This is his first appearance.
Sequels are in the wings. “The Morgan Conspiracy” has been plotted, it will take place around Harvard Business School; the third will be sited at Harvard Divinity. Think Omen with a twist. Each Harvard graduate school gets a chance. Second, it is deliberately written with an eye towards film, video, interactive websites, and even computer games; there is a definite and deliberate comic book aspect to Hunter and his adventures. Finally nearly all the action takes place in buildings and locations that actually exist. This allows readers to come to Harvard Square and use the entire area like a theme park or a walking tour of the book. T-Shirts and bobble-heads? Who knows?
But these areas are best elucidated by good agents, who are the ones that good publishers listen to. I have self-published in the past, and sold thousands of copies, so I know about that. I am going forward with this test market and my re-edit, but I’m hoping to communicate with people or enterprises with background, experience, and vision to help turn Hunter into a consistent franchise, or at least help deliver it to the right publisher who can.
